I drafted and prosecuted patents at one of the best law firms in the world. Most of my hours went to formatting, boilerplate, and mechanical tasks, all billed to the client by the hour, and the client saw none of it. Little time remained for the work that mattered most: understanding the invention, and explaining to its inventors what we were doing and why. 

We also know the other side. Angela and I were once PhD students at Caltech. Research was relentless and all-consuming, and anything else, such as talking to lawyers, seemed unimportant. Only in hindsight did we wish we had spent more of our time protecting our work. 

Fearn comes from both sides of that table. We wanted a firm that does the whole job, and does it in plain sight. In other words, a firm we would have wanted on either side of the table.
